In Taormina, we’ll stroll ancient streets that have welcomed cultures from the Greeks to modern artists, marvel at the Teatro Antico’s panoramic vistas, and savor the Ionian Sea’s timeless charm.
A hydrofoil ride to Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands, will reveal its volcanic origins and crystal-clear waters. A private boat experience will enable us to explore the islands of Panarea and Stromboli, and hopefully catch volcanic lava flows at dusk.

As we journey inland, to a medieval farmhouse for three nights, we will explore Sicily’s heart and treasures like the Villa Romana del Casale, a 4th-century Roman estate adorned with the world’s most intricate mosaics. These masterpieces tell stories of ancient hunting expeditions and daily life, blending art, engineering, and luxury. In Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, the grandeur of "Magna Graecia" ("Greater Greece") unfolds with each step among its Doric columns, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity of Greek civilization.
Throughout this journey, Sicily’s culinary heritage will shine, from rustic trattorias to hands-on cooking classes where we’ll craft traditional dishes using fresh, local ingredients. As we gather for meals, sharing stories and laughter, we’ll celebrate not only the flavors of Sicily but the spirit of discovery and connection that makes this trip truly unforgettable. Andiamo! Nestled along Sicily’s breathtaking eastern coastline, Taormina offers a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Our group will step into a town that has thrived since 734 BC when Greek settlers arrived, though its roots reach even further back to the Siculi, Sicily’s ancient inhabitants. Over the centuries, Taormina became a cultural and trading hub, with its iconic Greek-Roman theatre serving as a centerpiece for civic life. Through the ages, the town embraced a tapestry of influences—from the Islamic advances of the 9th century to the Norman and French legacies that followed—each leaving their mark on its vibrant identity. By the 20th century, Taormina blossomed into a haven for artists and writers like D.H. Lawrence and Truman Capote, drawn by its bohemian charm and stunning vistas.
After a delightful lunch, we’ll meet our expert guide who will lead us into the heart of Taormina.

Taormina's Public Gardens, also known as Giardini Pubblici, offer a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets of the town. Visitors can enjoy lush flora, including tropical and Mediterranean plants, as well as stunning views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna. The gardens also feature elegant statues, fountains, and winding pathways perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Corso Umberto I in Taormina is the main street that runs through the historic center of the town, lined with beautiful historic buildings and charming shops. Visitors can stroll along this picturesque street, admiring the architecture and browsing the various boutiques and cafes. The street offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the nearby Mount Etna, adding to the unique atmosphere of Taormina.
The Church of San Domenico in Taormina is a beautiful example of Sicilian Baroque architecture, located in the heart of the historic town. The church was built in the 15th century by the Dominican Order and is known for its intricate façade adorned with ornate decorations and sculptures.
Perched on a hillside with breathtaking views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, the Teatro Antico di Taormina stands as a testament to the artistic and architectural brilliance of the ancient world. Built in the 3rd century BC during the Hellenistic era, this grand theatre originally hosted Greek tragedies and comedies, later adapted by the Romans for gladiatorial games and other spectacles. Its ingenious design, which naturally amplifies sound, allowed for performances to resonate without the need for modern technology.
As we step into this remarkable space, the second-largest ancient theatre in Sicily, we’ll marvel at its enduring beauty and functionality. Today, it continues to celebrate its cultural legacy by hosting operas, concerts, and plays, creating a living link between the ancient past and modern artistic expression.

As our group steps onto Ortygia Island, we’ll be drawn to the grandeur of the Duomo Cathedral, a living tapestry of ancient and medieval architecture. Originally built in the 5th century BC as the pagan grand Temple of Athena, this sacred site once honored the goddess of wisdom and war. In the 7th century, Bishop Zosimo transformed the temple into a Christian cathedral, seamlessly incorporating its majestic Doric columns into the walls, where they remain proudly visible today.
Walking through its doors, we’ll feel the weight of centuries of worship and history, from its origins in Ancient Greece to its Christian rebirth. Our guide will bring to life the stories etched into its stones, showcasing the layered beauty of a site that has stood as a symbol of resilience and reverence for millennia.
In the historic heart of Syracuse, our group will visit the Church of Saint Lucy, a Baroque treasure built after the devastating 1693 earthquake that reshaped southeastern Sicily. Dedicated to Saint Lucy, the patron saint of Syracuse, the church honors her martyrdom in 304 AD during the Roman persecutions of Christians. Its ornate façade is a masterpiece of post-earthquake resilience, standing as a testament to the city’s enduring faith and strength.
Our group will explore the lively outdoor market in Ortigia, where history and modern life collide in a symphony of sights and sounds. Along Via Benedictus, vendors will call out with humor and enthusiasm, offering their freshly caught fish and seasonal produce. We’ll watch as tuna is expertly carved into steaks and sea urchins add a burst of color to the vibrant stalls. Among the fragrant lemons, ripe tomatoes, and artisan cheeses, we’ll sample the flavors of Sicily and soak in the bustling energy of this centuries-old tradition.
Just steps away, we’ll discover the ancient Temple of Apollo, a remarkable relic from the 6th century BC and the oldest Doric temple in Sicily. Over its long history, this sacred site has transformed from a Greek temple into a Byzantine church, an Islamic mosque, and later a Norman barracks. Standing in its shadow, we’ll imagine the generations of people who gathered here, weaving their lives into the fabric of Ortigia’s rich past. This journey will bring us closer to the timeless spirit of Sicily, where every corner has a story to tell.
Today we will dine outside in the farmer's market, enjoying samples of Sicilian street food that are absolutely delicious!
Enjoy a private boat tour around Ortigia Island, offering a new perspective on its rich history and natural beauty. As we glide across the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea, we’ll marvel at the island’s ancient fortifications and waterfront palaces, reminders of its role as a hub of commerce and culture for millennia. Our guide will share tales of the Greek settlers who first arrived in the 8th century BC and the many civilizations that followed, from Romans to Byzantines, each leaving their mark on this storied island.
We’ll pass beneath limestone cliffs and into hidden sea caves, witnessing the geological beauty that has inspired artists and writers for centuries. Along the way, we’ll spot landmarks like the Arethusa Fountain, tied to Greek mythology, and the striking skyline of Ortigia, blending medieval and Baroque architecture. This serene journey will allow us to experience the island’s timeless charm, where history meets the sea in perfect harmony.
Prepare for an afternoon of theatrical magic as we witness Sicily’s Opera dei Pupi, a tradition that dates back to the 15th century and continues to enthrall audiences today. These elaborately crafted puppets, adorned in shining armor and vibrant costumes, bring to life epic tales of knights battling monsters, jousting in tournaments, and confronting sorceresses. Rooted in Sicily’s turbulent history, these performances often draw inspiration from medieval chivalric romances, folklore, and historical events, making each show a unique blend of drama and heritage.
More than simple entertainment, Opera dei Pupi is a reflection of the island’s resilience, with its intense swordfights and surprising moments of realism—such as villains “bleeding” with the help of beet juice—showcasing Sicily’s artistic ingenuity. This ancient art form, now recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, offers a window into the spirit of Sicily, where tradition and storytelling come alive with every clash of swords. No popcorn needed—this show is unforgettable all on its own!

“Sicily is an island lying outside time, where past events endure in an external present, a beach on which the tides of successive civilizations have heaped in disorder their assorted treasure.”

Our group will ascend to the hilltop village of Castelmola, a hidden treasure of Sicily with roots dating back to ancient times. This hamlet, originally settled by the Greeks and later fortified during the Middle Ages, served as a strategic lookout over the surrounding region. From its elevated perch, Castelmola offers sweeping views of the Bay of Giardini Naxos and the ever-present Mount Etna, whose eruptions have shaped Sicily’s history for millennia. The village’s name is derived from its medieval castle (mola meaning “millstone”), remnants of which still crown the town, a reminder of its storied past.
As we wander the cobblestone streets, we’ll immerse ourselves in the timeless charm of this village, where centuries-old traditions linger in every corner. A visit to Bar Turrisi will introduce us to Vino di Mandorla (sweet almond wine), a local specialty that pairs perfectly with the bar’s eclectic and storied décor. Castelmola’s blend of history, breathtaking vistas, and warm hospitality makes it a highlight of any Sicilian journey. And for the surprise? You’ll just have to wait and see—it’s the perfect finishing touch to this unforgettable visit!
Recommendation: Shopping, exploring, and just knowing that "Life is a Beach!"
This afternoon, take time to explore Taormina’s many treasures or head toward the sparkling coastline to uncover the historical and natural beauty of this enchanting region. Taormina’s cable car, built to connect the clifftop town with the beaches below, offers breathtaking panoramic views as it descends to the seaside village of Mazzarò. Once a fishing hub, this bay is now a popular retreat for visitors, with its pebble shore dotted with colorful umbrellas and reminders of its maritime past.
A short walk away lies Isola Bella, a nature reserve established in 1998, but with roots that go back to 1806 when King Ferdinand I gifted the island to Taormina. Often referred to as the “Pearl of the Ionian Sea,” this tiny island is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand that appears and disappears with the tide. Its unique beauty and rich biodiversity have made it a protected site and a favorite destination for nature lovers. Whether you immerse yourself in the local history, take a refreshing dip in the sea, or simply soak up the Sicilian sun, this afternoon will leave you captivated by Taormina’s timeless charm.
End the day by reflecting on our adventures as we roll up our sleeves for an engaging cooking class, learning to prepare traditional Sicilian dishes using fresh, local ingredients. Together, we’ll enjoy the fruits of our labor over a delicious dinner, celebrating the flavors and culture of Sicily.

30 minutes into our journey, we will stop for an amazing "Keyrow surprise". What could it possibly be?
There will be time to enjoy a sandwich at the port of Milazzo before our departure for Lipari Island.
Upon our midday arrival to Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands, we’ll step into a world shaped by millennia of history and volcanic landscapes. Settled since the Neolithic period, Lipari flourished under the Greeks and Romans as a key trading hub, known for its obsidian and pumice exports. Today, we’ll enjoy a relaxed introduction to island life, with time to explore the lively Corso Vittorio Emanuele. This bustling street, lined with cafes, delis, and restaurants, has long been a focal point of community life. In the evening, the street transforms into a pedestrian haven, inviting us to join the locals in the timeless Sicilian tradition of the passeggiata, an evening stroll filled with conversation and charm.

Explore the rich history of Lipari town with a leisurely stroll through its most historic areas, taking in the sights of the castle, cathedral, and remnants of ancient civilizations.
Embark on a private boat journey through the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, exploring the breathtaking islands of Panarea and Stromboli. Weather permitting, we’ll explore secluded coves, marvel at dramatic volcanic landscapes, and soak in panoramic vistas of these enchanting Aeolian Islands.
Panarea is the smallest yet most prestigious of the Aeolian Islands, steeped in both ancient history and modern allure. Once a key settlement for prehistoric civilizations, its archeological remains reveal a Bronze Age village at Punta Milazzese, offering a glimpse into its ancient past. Later inhabited by the Greeks and Romans, Panarea’s strategic location made it a maritime hub in antiquity.
Today, this picturesque island has earned its reputation as the “VIP island,” attracting Europe’s elite who are drawn to its pristine beauty and understated elegance. Amid whitewashed houses and turquoise waters, Panarea remains a timeless retreat where history and modern sophistication blend seamlessly.
Stromboli, often referred to as the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean," is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, erupting consistently for over a millennium. Known for its dramatic “Strombolian eruptions,” the island offers a natural spectacle as bursts of black clouds dance in sky every 15 to 20 minutes. From the safety of our boat, we’ll hope to witness awe-inspiring lava cascades, but that's up to Mother Nature! Stromboli’s continuous activity has made it both a scientific marvel and a beacon of fascination for travelers throughout history.

As we "sail" back to Milazzo, we’ll enjoy the serene waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, reflecting on the natural beauty and volcanic wonders of the Aeolian Islands. This ferry ride offers one last chance to savor the stunning island vistas before returning to Sicily’s mainland.
Enjoy a delicious Sicilian lunch in the charming medieval town of Castelbuono, surrounded by centuries-old architecture and the flavors of the Madonie Mountains. This region is famous for mushrooms, so for those who love "funghi" this will be a mushroom-centric meal. (Of course, we will accommodate everyone's preferences with superb choices...mushrooms or not!)
Did someone say, "mushrooms?"
Enjoy the scenic drive to Cefalù, traveling through Sicily’s rolling countryside and picturesque coastal landscapes. Along the way, we’ll anticipate the charm of this medieval town nestled between the sea and a dramatic rocky backdrop.
Cefalù is a coastal jewel with a history that began with its Greek founding in the 5th century BC. This picturesque town, set against the Tyrrhenian Sea and the towering La Rocca mountain, has been shaped by centuries of Arab, Norman, Roman, and Greek influence. Together, we’ll visit the Norman Cathedral, a 12th-century masterpiece commissioned by King Roger II, adorned with exquisite Byzantine mosaics and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we stroll through Cefalù’s medieval streets and bustling harbor, our guide will weave together stories of its rich past, bringing this timeless fishermen's village to life.
Our guide will lead us to the heart of Cefalù’s history: the magnificent Norman Cathedral, commissioned by King Roger II in 1131 as a symbol of power and faith. Legend holds that Roger vowed to build the cathedral after surviving a shipwreck near Cefalù’s shores, dedicating the structure to divine providence. The fortress-like twin towers of the façade, accented by interlacing pointed arches, speak to its dual purpose as both a place of worship and a defensive stronghold during Sicily’s tumultuous medieval period.
Inside, we’ll stand in awe of the Byzantine mosaics completed in 1148, among the finest in Sicily. The Pantocrator, or “Christ the Teacher,” gazes down from the apse with an otherworldly presence, his blond hair and blue eyes a reflection of Norman artistic influence. The cathedral’s interior, blending Byzantine opulence with Norman solidity, tells the story of a cultural crossroads where art, religion, and history converge.
Our group will step back in time as we visit the Lavatoio, Cefalù’s ancient Saracen wash house, tucked away in the heart of the town. As we descend the elegant lava stone staircase, we’ll find ourselves in a beautifully preserved space where history and myth intertwine. For centuries, local women gathered here to wash clothes by hand in basins carved into the rock, their laughter and stories echoing through the stone walls. The water flows from 22 vents, 15 shaped like lion heads, fed by the Cefalino River, which runs beneath the town.
According to legend, the river is no ordinary water source—it is said to be the tears of a nymph mourning the loss of her beloved husband. Built during the Saracen era, this ingenious wash house reflects the practical design of the time, ensuring fresh water for the community. As we explore, we’ll imagine the bustle of daily life in a bygone era, where even something as ordinary as laundry carried its own charm and traditions. It’s a delightful stop that connects us to the rhythms of Cefalù’s storied past.
Our group will have the opportunity to enjoy free time in Cefalù, a picturesque fishing village nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the dramatic backdrop of La Rocca mountain. With its medieval streets and lively piazzas, Cefalù invites leisurely strolls, browsing through charming shops, or simply relaxing at a café to watch the vibrant rhythm of Sicilian life unfold. Whether exploring its quaint harbor or taking in the views along the sandy coastline, this scenic gem is perfect for soaking in the beauty and culture of Sicily.

“Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of the everyday, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. Travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art.”

Our morning hike to La Rocca promises a blend of adventure, history, and spectacular views for those ready to take on the climb. This towering 900-foot limestone crag, known to the ancient Phoenicians as the Fortress of Hercules, looms above Cefalù, offering both natural beauty and a window into its storied past. As we ascend, we will be reminded of tales of the Greek settlers who named the town after this “head-shaped” rock—Cefalù, from the Greek word kephale, meaning “head.”
At the summit of our hike we will visit the remnants of the Temple of Diana, a sacred 9th-century BC structure dedicated to water worship, revealing the spiritual significance of this site. The temple’s ancient cistern well, also from the 9th century BC, still stands as a testament to the ingenuity of its builders. Along the way, we’ll take in panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Cefalù below, making this hike as rewarding as it is enriching.
Want to hike more on your own? Continue upwards and explore the ruins of a medieval castle from the 13th century, its stones whispering of battles and ancient rulers.
Enjoy free time in Cefalù to browse charming shops, relax on the sandy beaches, or wander the town’s picturesque streets, soaking in its coastal charm and historic ambiance.

“Her gaze dims as her nostalgia for Palermo overcomes her. Those smells of seaweed dried by the sun, of capers, of ripe figs, she will never find them anywhere else; those burnt and scented shores, those waves slowly breaking, jasmine petals flaking in the sun.”

We’ll set off early for Palermo, traveling through Sicily’s picturesque landscapes as we head toward the island’s vibrant capital, known for its rich history and cultural fusion.
My name is Marilù Fichera and I am an authorised tourist guide from Palermo, the city where I was born and grew up. I graduated in foreign languages and literature with honours.
I have been working in tourism since 1989. In 2000 I became a tour guide for the city of Palermo in Italian, English, French and Spanish. Since then, I have been working mostly in the city but also in the whole extended territory of the province.
I particularly love art history, painting, photography and the study of symbols. I am convinced that relying on local people is the key to getting to know the place in the most authentic way, to be able to grasp its many facets.
I look forward to seeing you in Palermo!
Palermo’s Cathedral, a magnificent testament to Sicily’s diverse history, was first constructed in 1185 during the Norman period on the site of an earlier Byzantine church. Under Arab rule, it had been transformed into a mosque, and with the Norman conquest, it returned to its Christian roots. The cathedral’s architecture reflects this layered past, blending Norman, Gothic, Islamic, and Baroque elements in a stunning display of cultural fusion.
Inside, we’ll discover the tombs of Emperor Henry VI, his son Frederick II—renowned for his progressive rule and intellectual legacy—and Constance of Aragon. These royal burials highlight the cathedral’s role as both a place of worship and a symbol of imperial power. Its history, etched into its intricate façades and interior treasures, offers a fascinating journey through the epochs that shaped Palermo and Sicily as a whole.
Our journey will lead us to Monreale, a historic hilltop town just outside Palermo that flourished during the Norman reign in Sicily. Established as a center of power by King William II in the 12th century, Monreale became home to one of Sicily’s most magnificent architectural achievements. Its Norman cathedral, adorned with over 68,000 square feet of glittering gold mosaics, tells stories from the Bible in intricate detail and remains a crowning achievement of medieval art and craftsmanship.
Our guide will lead us through Monreale’s cathedral, a 12th-century Norman masterpiece blending Arab, Byzantine, and Romanesque styles. Adorned with stunning gold mosaics depicting biblical stories, the cathedral reflects the cultural fusion that defined Sicily during the Norman reign. The intricate patterns and arches inside echo Islamic artistry, making this a truly unique architectural marvel.

Our journey continues to Enna, often called the "bellybutton of Sicily" for its central location and elevation. Here, we’ll visit the historic Lombardy Castle, one of the island’s largest and best-preserved fortresses, originally built by the Normans atop ancient defensive structures. From its towers, we’ll take in breathtaking panoramic views of Sicily’s rolling landscapes before heading to Mandrascate for the next chapter of our adventure.
Marta Cannizzo graduated summa cum laude in Multimedia Communication Sciences from Kore University of Enna and acquired her regional and national licenses as a tour guide in 2014. Our group will journey into the opulent world of ancient Rome with a visit to the Villa Romana del Casale, a 4th-century estate located just outside Piazza Armerina. Constructed as the heart of a vast agricultural estate, this villa served as both a hunting lodge and a luxurious retreat for an elite Roman, possibly a senator or even a member of the imperial family. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is renowned for housing the largest and most intricate collection of Roman mosaics ever discovered, showcasing the artistry and extravagance of its time.
As we explore its richly adorned rooms, we’ll encounter mosaics that vividly depict life in the Roman Empire. Intricate hunting scenes span the floors, portraying exotic animals such as lions, elephants, and ostriches captured in far-off lands and destined for the Coliseum’s grand spectacles. The villa’s famous "Chamber of the Ten Maidens" will enchant us with mosaics of women engaged in ancient sports, from discus throwing to ball games, wearing attire strikingly similar to modern bikinis. Beyond its art, the villa offers insights into Roman engineering, with advanced heating systems and waterworks that underline the sophistication of this era. This visit is a journey through history, art, and ingenuity—a celebration of Rome’s grandeur at its height. Bravissima!

Once upon a time, a small group of friends embarked on a journey to explore the beautiful wonders of Sicily. They began their adventure in the charming town of Taormina, where they wandered through the narrow streets, marveling at the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
From Taormina, they ventured to Siracusa, where they were enchanted by the ancient ruins and the picturesque Ortigia island. The friends then set sail to the Aeolian Islands, where they watched volcanic eruptions from their private boat and soaked in the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Their next stop was the coastal town of Cefalu, where they basked in the sun on its golden sandy beaches and explored the medieval streets of the old town. In Palermo, they indulged in the local street food and explored the rich history of this vibrant city.
Next, they traveled to Agrigento to marvel at the well-preserved Greek temples in the Valley of the Temples before heading to Piazza Armerina to admire the intricate mosaics of the Villa Romana del Casale.
As the sun set on their Sicilian adventure, the friends reflected on the unforgettable experiences they shared and the bond that grew stronger with each new discovery. And so, their memories of Sicily would forever hold a special place in their hearts.
